Security and Dangerous Goods Regulations

Your safety and comfort is of utmost importance to us. In accordance to the security regulations, we advise our guests to follow the points mentioned below

  • Never accept any packets or items from unknown persons

  • Do not leave your baggage unattended at any time. Unattended baggage may be removed by the Airport or Security Staff on account of suspicion

  • Always declare carriage of any arms or explosive substances prior to check-in. Concealment is an offence under the Aircraft Act and Rules

  • Carry only one hand baggage, the dimensions of which should not exceed 1.15 linear metres (45.3 linear inches / 115 linear cms)

  • Battery cells or dry cells carried in the hand baggage or in any electrical or electronic items will be removed and the airline will not be in a position to hand over the same at the destination. The same may be carried in the checked-in baggage.


Carriage of Smart Luggage onboard

Guests carrying smart luggage onboard Jet Airways flights must take note of the following regulations as indicated by IATA.

  • The battery of the smart luggage must be removed. Smart luggage with non-removable battery will not be permitted onboard either as part of cabin baggage or check-in baggage.

  • In case of smart luggage being checked in, the battery for the same must be uninstalled. As per IATA once battery is uninstalled, the same can be carried as part of cabin baggage only.

  • In case of smart luggage being carried as cabin baggage, the battery must be uninstalled and carried inside the Cabin Baggage and must not be reinstalled in the smart luggage until arrival at the destination.

  • Guests are responsible for removal of the battery from the smart luggage and the check-in staff shall ensure the same is done prior to check-in.


Prohibited Articles

Carriage of dry cell batteries, knives, scissors, sharp instruments, tools, fire arms, ammunition and their toy replicas is prohibited in the passenger cabin.

Sporting equipment including but not limited to, cricket bats, golf clubs, ski poles, hockey sticks, pool cues etc. or items that can be used as a weapon, are not permitted as part of cabin baggage on flights operating from airports within India.
These articles may be carried as checked in baggage.

Carriage of power banks as part of check-in baggage is strictly prohibited. The same can be carried in cabin baggage.
Airport security agency/operator has all the rights to hold the bags if there is any suspicious /restricted items in the checked-in baggage.

Carriage of Lighters as part of cabin or check-in baggage is strictly prohibited.

Jet Airways will not take the responsibility of delivering the checked-in baggage which are held at departure stations due power bank/any suspicious/restricted items, this is because it is beyond the control of the airlines. The Airport security agency/operator has all the rights to withhold guests bags, in case they find any suspicious or restricted items as part of the checked-in baggage.
To clear the baggage from airport security agency, guest(s) are requested to contact the airline staff at arrival station. They will be required to fill the indemnity form, along with photo ID proof and scanned copy of Property Irregularity Report (PIR) authorising the Jet Airways staff to remove the power bank or any suspicious or restricted items, based on which the baggage will be cleared and despatched to the final destination, from where the guest will have to collect the same.
Power bank retrieved from the checked baggage, if handed over by the airport security to the airline, will be retained for 24 hours only, post which Jet Airways will not be held accountable as the same will be disposed due to safety reasons.
Jet Airways will not be accountable for any adverse consequence experienced by the guest with regards to the above.

Certain states and destinations have their own prohibitions and requirements for certain items being carried as baggage. Guest(s) are hereby informed that Bihar, Gujarat, Mizoram and Nagaland are dry states and hence carriage of alcohol/liquor to these destinations is prohibited. Guest(s) are hereby requested not to carry any products as prohibited by the local laws not limited to the above. In case of any confiscation at the airport, guest(s) will be solely responsible for the same. Consumption / possession / storage of alcohol / liquor in the state of Bihar is punishable by law with imprisonment for up to 10 years.

With immediate effect, Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), also called e-cigarettes, personal vaporizers, vape pens, e-cigars, e-hookah, or vaping devices are prohibited from use by both guests and crew at all times on board or in the vicinity of the aircraft. Jet Airways will not permit the use of any item which could insinuate that smoking is permitted on board the aircraft. Such items can be accepted on board in the guest's cabin baggage, for use at the destination, provided they remain kept and unused at all times in the guest's cabin baggage.


Valuable Articles

We recommend carriage of currency, precious metals, jewellery, negotiable instruments, securities, personal identification documents and other items of value as part of your cabin baggage.


Restricted Articles

Medicines and toiletries which are necessary or appropriate for travel , such as hair sprays, perfumes and medicines containing alcohol may be carried in limited quantities. Many of the listed articles can be carried as air cargo provided they are packed in accordance with cargo regulations.


Dangerous Goods

Jet Airways does not carry any kind of dangerous goods onboard its aircraft.Exception: Alcoholic beverages, perfumes and colognes, medicines or toiletries, small gaseous oxygen cylinders required for medical use, small carbon dioxide cylinders worn by the guest for the operation of mechanical limbs will be permitted onboard.

As per security regulations, carriage of the following articles as part of hand baggage is strictly prohibited:

  • Ammunition
  • Knives
  • Scissors
  • Tools
  • Toy replicas of guns
  • Firearms
  • Sharp Instruments
  • Lighters

As per the circular received from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security guests may be allowed to carry battery cells in the electronic items in the hand baggage or in person.

The following items, which would normally be considered as dangerous goods are accepted from the provisions of the regulations when carried by the guest. These are accepted subject to the quantity being limited:

  • Dry ice in quantities not exceeding 2.5 kilograms (5 pounds) per guest and used to pack perishables, can be carried as carry-on baggage only

  • Alcoholic Beverages - With approval of the carrier(s)

  • Dangerous Articles in Baggage - For safety reasons, dangerous articles, such as those listed below, must not be carried in guest's baggage

  • Compressed gases - (Deeply refrigerated, flammable, non-flammable and poisonous gases) such as butane, oxygen, liquid nitrogen, aqualung cylinders and compressed gas cylinders

  • Corrosives such as acids, alkalis, mercury and wet cell batteries and apparatus containing mercury

  • Explosives, ammunition, fireworks and flares. Ammunition including blank cartridges, hand guns, fireworks, and pistol caps

  • Flammable liquids and solids such as lighter refills, lighter fuel, matches, paints, thinners, fire-lighters, lighters that need inverting before ignition

  • Radioactive material

  • Briefcases and attaché cases with installed alarm devices

  • Oxidizing materials such as bleaching powder and peroxides

  • Poisons and infectious substances such as insecticides, weed-killers and live virus materials

  • Small oxygen cylinders for medical use and small carbon dioxide gas cylinders worn by guest for the operation of mechanical limbs

  • Other dangerous articles such as magnetized materials, offensive or irritating materials

Weapons and Ammunitions

Jet Airways will charge INR 5000 per fire arm, air gun and / or ammunition (up to 50 rounds) per guest for additional services provided during handling and carriage of fire arm, air gun or ammunition in their registered baggage on within India sectors.

As per directives from the Regulatory Authority of India, weapons and ammunition can be placed onboard the aircraft only in a special compartment designed for carriage of weapons and ammunition. Accordingly, the weapon will be segregated from the registered baggage and will be placed separately in the weapon compartment in case you are traveling on an ATR aircraft.

To comply with the requirement of the regulatory authority, a special compartment measuring 09" wide, 30" in height and 04" in depth has been provided onboard the ATR aircraft . Only weapons that fit into this special compartment shall be accepted for carriage on the ATR aircraft. Weapon holders are requested to confirm the type of aircraft and the size of weapon at the time of ticket booking.

On International sectors guest will be charged US $100 for the additional service provided during handling and carriage of fire arm, air gun or ammunition in their registered baggage. For more information, please click here.

Licenced firearm(s) and/or ammunition will only be accepted as check-in baggage within 2 hours of the scheduled time of departure.

For travel involving connecting flights between more than 1 destination, licenced firearm(s) and/or ammunition will only be accepted as through check-in baggage if the connection time between the arrival flight and connecting departure flight is less than 2 hours. If the time between connecting flights exceeds 2 hours, guests will be required to recheck in their licenced firearm(s) and/or ammunition for their connecting flight.

Use of Mobile Phones onboard

As per the latest amendment to the Civil Aviation Requirement, Section 5, Series X, Part I issued by DGCA, guests onboard all flights are required to follow the prescribed guidelines for the use of mobile phones and Transmitting PED's (Personal Electronic Devices) on ‘Flight Mode’. Prior to departure: Guests will be permitted to use their mobile phones while the aircraft doors are open, unless advised by the Captain. (i.e. during aircraft refueling, aircraft Radio Telephony communication; and pre-flight functions like entries in the FMS and GPS navigation system)

Guests will be required to switch off their Mobile phones and other portable electronic devices once the aircraft doors are closed. Flight Mode will not be permitted.

In-flight: Guests will be permitted to use Mobile phones and Transmitting PED’s on Flight or Airplane mode only after the seat belt sign has been switched off.

In case of any interference and for safety reasons, the Cabin Crew in charge may inform the guests to stop using their PEDs. Prior to landing: Guests must switch off all electronic devices like Laptops, transmitting PED’s including mobile phones.

After landing: Guests will be permitted to use mobile phones once the aircraft clears the active runway. However this may not be applicable incase the landing takes place in low visibility conditions.

The Cabin Crew in charge will clearly mention low visibility conditions during the pre-landing announcement.

Carriage of Spare Lithium Ion Batteries

Spare Lithium ion batteries may be carried as checked-in or cabin baggage provided they are installed within and connected to the accompanied device. Carriage of spare Lithium ion batteries without an associated device or disengaged from the associated device will be permitted only as part of cabin baggage. Only Lithium ion batteries of watt-hour (Wh) rating above 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh, will be permitted.

Spare batteries must be individually protected by ensuring each one is placed in the original retail packaging or by insulating the terminals, e.g. by taping over the exposed terminals and placing each battery in a separate plastic pouch to prevent short circuit.

Spare Lithium Ion Batteries will not be permitted as part of checked-in baggage.


Prohibition of carriage of Lithium battery powered devices onboard.

In the interest of safety of all guests onboard our flights, all personal motorized transportation devices using Lithium-ion batteries, including, and similar to hover-boards, Segways, airwheels, solowheels, mini-segway, balance wheels, self-balancing boards, balance gliders are prohibited for transportation on Jet Airways flights as checked-in or carry-on baggage, with immediate effect.
