As we commemorate 20 years of serving our guests and emerging along the way as India’s most preferred airline, do join us on our little flight down memory lane as we relive the past and look ahead towards a bright future.
Our chosen brand position of a ‘world class airline’ was determined with the values of professionalism and warmth, which were also reflected in our product and service delivery to our guests. In our first year of operations, these values were manifest within our mission statement; the introduction of Club Première, a branded business class of international standards; and in the choice of our corporate symbol and brand colours. These core values were built into our brand colours where blue stands for professionalism and yellow represents warmth. Similarly, our chosen corporate symbol—the Flying Sun—was conceptualised as a graphic representation of an aeroplane’s tailwings speeding past the sun.
The first Jet Airways flight, which marked the beginning of a new chapter in Indian civil aviation, was also the first time a Modern Generation B737-300 aircraft was being flown in the Indian skies. As the first private operator to introduce the air traveler in India to the reliability and comfort of new technology, Jet Airways challenged and changed the concept of guest satisfaction in Indian civil aviation forever. It was the first of the many milestones to follow.
In the first year we operated 28 daily flights to 12 destinations in India with a fleet of four B737-300 aircraft, leased from Ansett Aviation, Australia. Ansett was also our chosen partner for training our pilots and engineers, thus ensuring that our operations were reliable and that we placed the safety of our guests in the best possible hands. In an effort to set the highest standards in customer service across all functions, we worked with Speedwings, a British Airways subsidiary, to train our staff at all levels. We made investments in hiring the world’s best expertise that enabled us to deliver a new and superior air travel experience on the ground and in the air, thereby ensuring that our guests would truly experience the ‘Joy of Flying’.
In the air, our guests were provided with the excellent facilities and superior comforts of a modern aircraft with immaculately maintained cabin interiors, comfortable seating, and a young and courteous crew who delivered a full in-flight service comprising hot and cold towels, a welcome drink and delectable meals. Keeping our services impeccable on the ground, we ensured direct flights at convenient timings and the experience of accurate and efficient reservations systems through a tie-up with SABRE, one of the world’s best reservation systems. Efficient and polite airline personnel assisted our guests at the airport, ensuring a speedy check-in, reliable on-time flight departures and arrivals, and speedy baggage retrieval. There was no stone left unturned in setting new standards at every step of customer interaction in civil aviation.
The resolve to deliver only the best, the investments and hard work paid off and at the end of our first year there was growing recognition amongst discerning domestic business travellers that Jet Airways was a professional, reliable airline that lived up to its promise of being truly world class.
