Expectant Mothers

Expectant Mothers on our sectors within India and Dhaka, Colombo & Kathmandu:

Expectant mothers with single uncomplicated pregnancies

  • Maybe permitted to fly till the start of 32nd week without a medical certificate.

  • Maybe permitted to fly till the end of 36 weeks provided there are no prior / present complications. However a certificate from treating obstetrician is required from the start of 32 weeks stating number of weeks the pregnancy has advanced and that the guest is fit to travel by air & that there are no complications.

  • Maybe permitted to fly after the end of 36th week till end of 38th week provided the expectant mother has a 'Fitness to Fly' certificate / MEDIF from her treating obstetrician duly approved by 9W Medical Dept and she is accompanied by at least an MBBS doctor. Flying is not permitted under any circumstances after end of 38th week of pregnancy.

Expectant mothers with multiple uncomplicated pregnancies

  • Cases of multiple uncomplicated pregnancies may be accepted up to the end of the 32nd week only after getting an approval from the 9W Medical Department (on case-to-case basis) and in some cases the expectant mother may have to be accompanied by at least an MBBS doctor.

All cases of complicated / high-risk pregnancies would be permitted to fly only after getting approval from the 9W Medical Department (on case-to-case basis) and in some cases the expectant mother may have to be accompanied by at least an MBBS doctor.

Post delivery, the mother is permitted to fly along with her baby only after 7 days from the date of delivery of the baby.

Following a normal delivery, in the absence of any complications, the mother may be permitted to fly 48 hours after delivery provided she has a 'Fitness to Fly' certificate from her treating obstetrician. However, following a Caesarean section, the guest would be permitted to fly after one week and would need a letter from her Obstetrician stating that she is fit to fly.

However, in an exigency wherein life saving treatment is mandatory for the infant, the mother may be permitted to fly with the new born provided the newborn is certified fit to fly by the concerned pediatrician and is accompanied by at least an MBBS doctor. Whilst making a booking, also advise the reservations department about your travel.

Expectant Mothers on our International Sectors:

It is generally safe to fly in the early stages of pregnancy. However, we advise all pregnant guests to consult their treating doctor before planning a trip.

Precautions before travel

  • Consult with your doctor regarding your travel plans & inform him if you have any symptoms such as bleeding, leaking or morning sickness, or if you have any complications including threatened miscarriage, anaemia, or toxemia of pregnancy during pregnancy.

  • Reduce stress as much as possible.

  • The best time to travel during pregnancy in absence of complications is the stable period between 12 and 28 weeks.

Medical Certificates are not required for cases of uncomplicated pregnancy up to end of 28 weeks.

Medical certificates are required for cases on international routes as per details below:

  • Uncomplicated single pregnancies between start of 29 weeks and end of 35 weeks

  • Uncomplicated multiple pregnancies between start of 29 weeks and end of 32 weeks

  • All cases in event of complications (past or present)

  • All cases of complicated / high-risk pregnancies will be considered for fitness on case to case basis only & medical escort may be mandatory

Expectant mothers are required to provide a medical certificate stating the following:

  • Fitness to travel
  • Number of weeks of pregnancy
  • Estimated date of delivery
  • Absence of complications (past or present). The certificate should be dated within ten days of the date of the first flight exceeding 28 weeks of pregnancy (in uncomplicated cases). This certificate will have to be sent to medical department for clearance & presented at check-in when requested.

In cases of uncomplicated pregnancies, you need not present any medical certificate if you are travelling within the 28th week of pregnancy (calculated based on the expected date of delivery). However, if at time of your return flight you have exceeded 28 weeks of pregnancy, you will need to present a medical certificate & 9W Medical Department's clearance is required.

The certificate must be available on request and be carried with you at the airport and during the flight in your cabin baggage.

Please note that for your safety, if you choose not to carry a medical certificate, Jet Airways reserves the right to refuse boarding.

Medical Certificates

  • The doctor responsible must fill in the due date, number of weeks of pregnancy, whether or not it is safe for the woman to fly, state that she is free of complications and give in writing any special precautions that should be taken during travel.

  • Medical certificates must be submitted to our Medical Department 48-72 hours before departure.
